RUBELLA – IgM

Clinical Significance:

Rubella virus is the sole member of the Rubivirus genus in the Togaviridae family. Unlike most Togaviruses it is not arthropod-borne, but is acquired via the respiratory route. The presence of IgM antibodies to rubella is indicative of acute infection or vaccination. In newborns, IgM antibodies alone indicate that the newborn was exposed in utero and may have health problems like hearing loss.
